First Nations Healthy Choice Recipes

OKI!

The First Nations Healthy Choice Recipes book was developed bringing together traditional Indigenous foods with modern Canadian meals. This book includes recipes from communities across Canada. These recipes can be enjoyed by everyone and are based on traditional Indigenous recipes. The cookbook was originally prepared by the Southern Alberta Aboriginal Diabetes Coalition in 2003 with the first print issue in 2004. The recipe book contains 125 recipes as well as tips for eating and living well, suggestions for keeping fit, and easy-on-the-wallet grocery shopping ideas.

Six main objectives of the recipe book were to:
1) Encourage traditional Indigenous foods
2) Promote healthy eating and active living
3) Provide food budgeting information
4) Increase food safety knowledge
5) Increase nutrition resources for Indigenous people.

The recipe book is designed to increase healthy, affordable eating as well as promoting healthy lifestyles while maintaining the traditional Indigenous lifestyles throughout Canada. The goals for the recipe book are to simply share healthy recipes, keeping traditions alive and increasing awareness of the need for healthy living for Indigenous people throughout generations.
