OKI! Special thanks to Lee Ann Johnson who was the inspiration behind the First Nations Healthy Choice Recipes book. Over 20 years ago, Lee Ann was inspired to share the nutritional benefits of traditional food and highlight the importance of these foods in preventing chronic diseases prevalent in Indigenous populations, such as diabetes. The aim was to share how traditional foods contribute to the sense of belonging and identity among Indigenous peoples. She was inspired to pass down these traditions with generations now and into the future. In this interview, Lee Ann speaks about her inspiration for creating the First Nations Healthy Choice Recipes book.
Canada's Indigenous populations have tremendous perseverance and strength. Indigenous peoples often face greater health challenges than most, including an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Many increased health challenges are related to multiple factors including Canada’s colonial history, such as residential schools, Indian hospitals, loss of language, culture and food traditions; a lack of access to affordable, nutritious food; and an increased genetic risk for type 2 diabetes.
The former Southern Alberta Aboriginal Diabetes Coalition recognized a need for the First Nations Healthy Choice Recipe Book with traditional recipes from across Canada. The committee also recognized a need to provide tips for safe, healthy eating on a budget, along with ways to increase daily physical activity. The committee desired to bring cultural food and practices back to the table, especially for youth and future generations. Through the recipe book, the committee hoped to increase awareness of this growing diabetes epidemic among Indigenous people and to promote healthy eating. The recipes include traditional foods and modern recipes. The first edition was printed in 2004 with multiple reprints. We are pleased to bring the updated virtual issue of the recipe book to share widely.
The recipe book is designed to promote healthy, affordable eating as well as encouraging healthy lifestyles while maintaining the traditional way of life throughout Canada.
